POSITION SUMMARY:

The R&D Combustion Research & Process Engineer will be a member of the Linde Technology Combustion Applications team. The engineer in this role will lead the identification, development, demonstration, and commercialization of new industrial gas applications technology for Linde's worldwide customers in glass, biofuels, energy, refining, cement, and related industries. This will require close collaboration with Linde business units, customers' operations and technical experts, and EPC engineering staff. The primary role is to provide process support to multiple commercialization projects that are in the execution stage. The engineer will be responsible for development of PFD and P&IDs for Linde supplied scope, working with customers on plant-wise or process-wise integration and optimization, and safety reviews. The engineer will also be tasked to perform techno-economic analysis and conduct Front End Loading studies for implementation of combustion technologies in customer's process. Other responsibilities include equipment specification and vendor sourcing, reviewing, and procuring major equipment, working with engineering companies on detail design, and participating in startups and commissioning.

The ideal candidate must possess strong mechanical or chemical engineering skills, excellent written/oral communication skills, and have the drive to learn new technical areas and take these technologies to commercialization. The candidate should have experience with hands-on experimental and/or field work and proficiency in process engineering which would include process design and optimization, simulation, and flowsheet evaluation, SOLIDWORKS for equipment design and plant layout, chemical kinetics, or data analysis. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated the ability to lead a project team of multiple disciplines in executing projects from design, equipment procurement, construction, startup and troubleshooting, and performance validation. Understanding of customers' processes in glass, biofuels, energy, refining, cement, or power production would be beneficial. Strong focus on safety is required as significant time is spent working on highly energetic systems and at customer sites.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • The successful candidate will lead various combustion projects with initial focus on providing process support to execution of commercial installations at the customers' facilities
  • Main responsibilities include perform techno-economic analysis for integration of Linde technologies to customer process; develop PFDs/P&IDs and lead process safety reviews; process optimization; conduct or work with the engineering company on process detail design and equipment procurement
  • Participate or lead field construction, startup activities, and operation troubleshooting
  • Responsible for technology performance validation and report out
  • Continue to support Linde customers and business units and assist them to troubleshoot operational problems
  • Other responsibilities for the candidate include: lead research and development programs through a stage-gate process; design and conduct testing of new technologies in Linde labs; present results, develop recommendations, and align with leadership on action plans and priorities
  • The candidate will collaborate with various teams to meet project milestones and decision points on time
  • Support development of marketing materials, make presentations at external technical meetings and conferences, participate in technical discussions with current and prospective customers

    Qualifications:

    Salary and Job Grade Commensurate with Experience

    Basic:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
    • Experience as a process lead collaborating with multidiscipline teams on technology/process evaluations and execution of projects leading to commercialization at customer sites
    • Strong mechanical or chemical engineering skills (or related discipline)
    • Expertise in process analysis, process design, process safety, simulation (process, optimization, or SOLIDWORKS), chemical kinetics, fluid dynamics, data processing, equipment design and specification, or control knowledge.
    • Organized, driven and effective at written and oral communication
    • Ability to work in industrial plants and travel up to 30% of the time (domestic and international)
      Preferred:
      • Masters or Doctorate Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
      • Experience in the science and technology of Combustion
      • Experience leading new technology development programs from idea generation through proof of concept into field demonstration and commercialization
      • Strong project management & budget estimation skills
      • Hands-on process startup and operation experiences
      • Strong process optimization and plant troubleshooting skills
      • Experience with glass, biofuels, energy, chemicals, or refining industry processes and customers
