Director of the Center for International Education
The Director of the Center for International Education reports to
the Assistant Dean/Director of the Multicultural Student Center.
The Center for International Education (CIE) is part of the
Multicultural Student Center which also includes the ALANA Student
Center. The CIE supports the international student community and
coordinates the study abroad programs on campus. The ALANA Student
Center supports students who identify as African American, Latinx,
Asian, and Native American while educating the campus community
around cultural competency.
Qualifications:
- A master's degree in a related field, e.g. foreign languages,
higher education administration, international relations,
counseling.
- Knowledge and experience using the Student & Exchange Visitor
Information System (SEVIS)
- Comfort and sensitivity in interacting with individuals from
other cultures.
- Enthusiasm, passion and commitment to the importance of
studying abroad.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to negotiate
partnerships abroad.
- Excellent leadership skills, organizational skills and
attention to detail. Excellent written and oral communication
skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Experience in university administration or in a cross-cultural
setting.
- Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Familiarity with higher education systems abroad.
- Experience training and supervising staff including graduate
assistants and interns.
- Familiarity with computer applications and ease and comfort
with technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Study Abroad:
- Create and maintain comprehensive guides and programs for
students and parents that help clearly communicate resources and
opportunities related to each component of the study abroad
experience. Materials and programs created should address in detail
(1) the initial information concerning study abroad opportunities,
to (2) financing study abroad experiences, (3) completion of all
aspects of the application process, to (4) preparation for the
study abroad experience, to (5) the time during which the student
is studying abroad, to (6) the re-entry process.
- Assist students in the selection of the most appropriate study
abroad program
- Keep informed about visa requirements for each program and
assist students with their study abroad visa applications.
- Provide a pre-departure orientation for each study abroad
program
- Oversee events planned for Canisius students who will be
studying abroad to meet current exchange students from our partner
schools.
- Oversee the Study Abroad Ambassador Program
International Partnerships:
- Develop and maintain close working relationships with all
partner schools
- Develop new relationships with international universities
within the framework of overall institutional priorities and work
with new partners in creating a memorandum of
understanding/exchange agreement
- Maintain balance of our exchange programs
- Update, evaluate and renew exchange agreements as
necessary.
- Work closely with US and international Jesuit universities to
share resources and collaborate with study abroad endeavors.
International Students:
- Advise and counsel international students regarding academic
programs, English language proficiency, health care, cultural
matters and general orientation to life in the United
States.
- Assist international students in complying with U.S. and
foreign government regulations upon which their entrance into the
U.S. is contingent.
- Organize and carry out a new student orientation for new
international students.
- Assist in the admissions process of international students by
working closely with the Admissions Office.
- Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and manage and
coordinate I-20 distribution, and SEVIS registration and
updates.
Administrative:
- Develop and maintain excellent communication and working
relationships with faculty and administrative units on campus
including Associate/Assistant Deans, Student Records & Financial
Services, Controller's Office, and Student Affairs.
- Hire and supervise graduate assistants from the Canisius
University Higher Education & Student Affairs Administration
Program.
- Organize and oversee the selection process each semester for
the study abroad applicants in coordination with the
Associate/Assistant Deans
- Provide information regarding the curriculum offered at
Canisius study abroad sites to Associate/Assistant Deans and
Department Chairs.
- Meet individually with faculty exploring new program
development. Advise faculty on study abroad processes,
pre-departure orientation, and timeline for program
development.
- Build and implement a comprehensive assessment calendar and
plan to evaluate study abroad programs and inform decision
making
- Plan and project budget progress and needs related to the study
abroad program
- Maintain current records of study abroad participation by
Canisius students and inform appropriate offices of those students
studying abroad.
- Make recommendations on policies regarding study abroad in
consultation with appropriate Canisius offices and
committees.
- Review the Canisius Study Abroad and Exchange Program Emergency
and Crisis Response Plan on a periodic basis, making changes, as
necessary, in keeping with professional best practices in risk
management and emergency/crisis response.
- Prepare annual statistical reports regarding international
students and countries of origin, financial aid, program summaries
and related information

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary: $63,700.00 annually
Please note that the compensation information is a good faith
estimate of the base pay for this position. The selected
candidate's actual base pay will be based on job-related,
non-discriminatory factors including experience. Information about
the total compensation package for this position will be provided
during the interview process.
This is a full-time position. Benefits are available the first of
the month after the full-time employee's date of hire and include -
health, dental and vision insurance, life and long-term disability
insurance, and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time
employees with contribution from the University after one year.
Paid holidays, vacation, personal leave, and sick leave. Tuition
benefits are also available for full-time employees and their
qualified dependents.
